Hades 2 Fear & Nightmare Guide 2026: Optimal Pact Setup for Every Fear Level (0-50)

2026-06-26·Tips & Tricks

I activated enemies-have-+40%-speed on 20 Fear thinking 'I can dodge faster.' I couldn't. Some Fear penalties are run-enders. Others are free Fear that barely matter. Knowing which is which is the difference between 32 Fear and being stuck at 16.

Fear system basics

Fear is Hades 2's heat system — self-imposed penalties that increase difficulty and rewards. Each point of Fear increases Darkness and Cinder drops by roughly 3% per point. At 32 Fear, you're getting roughly double resources per run compared to 0 Fear.

The only mandatory Fear targets are 12 Fear (first statue) and 32 Fear (final statue). Everything between is for personal challenge or faster resource farming.

Fear penalty tiers: pick these vs avoid at all costs

S-Tier (free Fear — always pick first):

  • Debt to Charon (2 Fear/cost): Obol prices +40% per rank. On low Fear, just buy less. On high Fear, you're not shopping much anyway. Maximum 10 Fear for very little cost.

  • Scarred Vow (2 Fear): Healing reduced by 25%. Mid-run healing is already minimal — most health comes from fountains and Rib. Negligible real impact.
  • Haste (1 Fear/cost): Enemies +20% speed per rank. At 1 rank: barely noticeable. NEVER take multiple ranks — 40% speed stacks with armored enemies and becomes unreactable.
  • Brutality (2 Fear): Enemies +20% damage. First rank is manageable. Stacking with Frenzy is a mistake (see below).
  • Frenzy (2 Fear): Enemies +20% attack speed. Take MAX 1 rank. Enemies at +40% attack speed with armor cannot be dodged — attacks overlap.

Rank 1 of Haste + Frenzy + Brutality = 5 Fear total, very manageable.

A-Tier (manageable with adjustment):

  • Forfeit (3 Fear): Lose 1 Boon choice when clearing a chamber. Annoying but not run-ending. Avoid combining with Routine Inspection.
  • Routine Inspection (2 Fear/cost): -1 boon per room from Chaos gates and Charon. At 1 rank: barely noticeable. At 2-3 ranks: severely limits build consistency.
  • Tight Deadline (1 Fear/cost): 9-minute per-zone timer. 9 minutes per zone is generous at 0 Fear. At high Fear with more enemies: gets tight fast. Stop at rank 2 (7 minutes) unless speedrunning.

B-Tier (risky — pick only if you must):

  • Jurisdiction (2 Fear/cost): +20% enemies per chamber. More enemies = more time = longer runs. Synergizes terribly with Tight Deadline. Never combine these two.
  • Calisthenics (1 Fear/cost): Enemies +15% health. Fine at low Fear, but stacked with armor enemies + damage reduction boons: bullet sponges.
  • Damage Control (2 Fear/cost): Enemies block first 1/2/3 hits. Completely bricks one-hit weapons (axe, skull). Only take with fast weapons (daggers, staff).

F-Tier (run-enders — NEVER take):

  • Approval Process (3 Fear/cost): -1 boon choice when offered. Combined with Forfeit: you get 1-2 boon choices per room instead of 3. Congratulations, your build is now random. This is the single worst penalty in the game.
  • Heightened Security (1 Fear): Traps and magma deal +400% damage. A single magma tile in Asphodel hits for 40+ damage. Magma + Haste enemies = constant health drain. No statue is worth this penalty.
  • Underworld Customs (2 Fear): Must sell 1 boon per zone. This actively REMOVES parts of your build. Removing 4 boons across a full run destroys synergy. The reward from selling is almost never worth the boon lost.

Optimal Fear setups by target

12 Fear (first statue): Debt to Charon rank 2 (4 Fear) + Scarred Vow (2 Fear) + Brutality rank 1 (2 Fear) + Frenzy rank 1 (2 Fear) + Haste rank 1 (1 Fear) + Routine Inspection rank 1 (1 Fear) = 12 Fear. Very manageable build that doesn't remove any core systems.

20 Fear: Stack the "S-Tier" list: Debt to Charon rank 3 (6) + Scarred Vow (2) + Brutality rank 2 (4) + Frenzy rank 1 (2) + Haste rank 1 (1) + Routine Inspection rank 1 (1) + Damage Control rank 1 (2) + Calisthenics rank 1 (1) + Tight Deadline rank 1 (1) = 20 Fear.

32 Fear (final statue — the actual setup I used): Debt to Charon max rank 5 (10 Fear) + Scarred Vow (2) + Brutality rank 2 (4) + Frenzy rank 1 (2) + Haste rank 1 (1) + Routine Inspection rank 2 (4) + Damage Control rank 1 (2) + Calisthenics rank 2 (3) + Tight Deadline rank 1 (1) + Forfeit (3) = 32 Fear.

This setup sucks but doesn't kill you. No Approval Process. No Heightened Security. No Underworld Customs. The enemy HP and damage are high but you can still build properly and dodge everything.

32 Fear winning strategy: Build only the safest builds. Hestia scorch (applies passively while you dodge), Demeter freeze (CC everything), Aphrodite weak (40% damage reduction on everything). Do NOT build Zeus attack glass cannon — at 32 Fear, one mistake kills you. Pick Rib as your companion (heal). Path toward fountains whenever possible. Skip Chaos gates — the debuff can end your run.

50 Fear: If and only if you've cleared 32 Fear. Replace Routine Inspection with Approval Process to reach 50. At 50 Fear, you accept your build will be random and you play what the game gives you. This is for bragging rights, not farming.
